Korean War facts

Soviet troops occupied Korea north of the 38th parallel. American forces then took control of the line.

Because the the north korean forces crossed this likne in june of 1950, the conflict was known as the korean war.

MacArthur wanted to pursue the enemy into north korea, in hopes the invasion might lead to a reunion of the two koreas. The chinese warned them to stop.

Chinese leaders warned if any further advance would take place they would enter war. The UN forces pushed anyway.

On november 25, 1950 hundereds of thousands of chinese communist troops attacked in human waves across the yalu river into north korea. they droe UN troops back to south Korea.

MacAruther was fired by Truman. Truman viewed his public criticism of his orders as undermining civilian control of the military.

A new president was chosen in 1952. General dwight d. eisenhower. He agreed to compramise to end war. but he secretyly was ready to use nuclear weapons and carry war into china.

A cease fire ended the fighting in july 1953. The two koreas were left more or less where they had been in 1950 with a border near the 38th parell.

Joseph Mcarthy (senetor from WI) used the korean war to fan americans fears of communism.

in august 1949 americans learned the the soviet usnion had produced an atomic bomb. the two superpowers were soon locked in an arms race, developing weapons with more destructive power.
